This presentation explores IPV as a form of intergenerational trauma, examining the biological, psychological, relational, and social pathways through which trauma is transmitted from caregivers to children. Participants will gain an understanding of how toxic stress, attachment disruptions, prenatal stress exposure, and epigenetic processes influence child development from infancy through adolescence, while also recognizing the long-term effects on mental health, physical health, identity, learning, and future relationships.

Drawing from research, developmental science, and clinical practice, this session will review common trauma responses across developmental stages and discuss how exposure to IPV affects caregivers, the caregiver-child relationship, and the family system. Through clinical case examples, participants will learn to recognize trauma adaptations that are often misunderstood or misdiagnosed and will explore how developmental context should guide assessment and intervention.

The presentation concludes with evidence-informed, trauma-specific, attachment-based, resilience-oriented, and culturally responsive approaches to treatment. Participants will be introduced to holistic interventions—including Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), somatic approaches, community and culturally rooted healing practices, and multidisciplinary supports—that can help interrupt the intergenerational transmission of trauma and promote healing for children, caregivers, and families affected by IPV.

Learning Objectives:

Define intergenerational trauma and explain the role of intimate partner violence in its transmission across generations.

Describe the neurobiological, developmental, and relational effects of IPV exposure from pregnancy through adolescence.

Differentiate trauma adaptations from behaviors commonly misinterpreted as oppositional, defiant, or noncompliant across developmental stages.

Analyze how caregiver functioning, attachment relationships, and shared trauma influence children's emotional and behavioral outcomes.

Apply trauma-informed, attachment-based, and culturally responsive interventions to clinical case examples involving children and families affected by IPV.

Integrate resilience-building and social justice principles into assessment, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration with children and families experiencing intergenerational trauma.

Intended Audience:

Behavioral health clinicians, supervisors, leaders, peer specialists, and allied professionals.

Instructional Level:

Introductory

Completion Requirements:

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate.
