About This Course
High intensity client behaviors (aggression, self-harm, intrusive and/or demanding behavior) effect everyone in residential and outpatient programs. Programs where there are frequent high intensity behaviors report higher incidents of staff burnout, Worker’s Compensation claims, transfers, attrition and lower overall job satisfaction.
Behavioral principles have been used with effectiveness and inform principles of learning that occur independent of the age, literacy level, developmental level or cognitive capacity of the client. These principles have been used to train animals, decrease aggressive behaviors in children and adults, with clients with neuro-divergence, psychosis and developmental disabilities. However, behavioral principles do not create new behaviors. To decrease problematic behavior and increase functional behavior, patients must first learn new skillful behaviors like mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance. However, therapeutic milieus can be structured to coach and strengthen skillful behavior even when the client is not in a formal DBT program. This training is designed to teach principles of behaviors, coaching and creating coaching plans for clients who are in DBT and those who are not in DBT.
This training will focus on information and practice to coach new behavior using the principles of behaviorism and contingency management.
