About This Course

Burnout affects workers across occupations.  It affects individuals and the organizations where they work as burnout contributes to use of sick leave, attrition and overall job dissatisfaction.  Secondary trauma is the result of repeatedly hearing the traumatic experiences of others.  Secondary trauma can lead to secondary traumatic stress, a disorder like post-traumatic stress disorder or to burnout.  

This training is designed for anyone who works with traumatized individuals.  Burnout and secondary trauma will be defined along with the demographics of the issues and ways to assess for each.  The symptoms and treatments for burnout and secondary trauma will be presented along with ways to increase resilience and prevent them.  Finally, creating a peer support group for trauma and burnout will be discussed along with a final practice on creating a resilience plan. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Define burnout and secondary trauma.  
  • Describe the symptoms of burnout.  
  • List two treatments for burnout and secondary trauma. 
  • Explain strategies for increasing resilience and prevent burnout.
  • Explain strategies for increasing resilience and preventing secondary trauma. 
  • Create a plan for self-care when working with traumatized individuals.  

 

Intended Audience: 

Anyone who works with traumatized individuals, especially in high stress work environments where they hear trauma stories, e.g. mental health, medical, first responders, teachers, child care workers

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.

 

Credit Statements:

BHTEN is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET CEU. 
As an IACET Accredited Provider, BHTEN offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.  BHTEN is authorized by IACET to offer CEUs for this program.
(.7 CEU = 6.5 Training Hours)

6.5 CE credit hours for Psychologists awarded.  BHTEN is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  BHTEN maintains responsibility for this program and its content


Behavioral Health Training and Education Network BHTEN, #1779, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards have the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/22/22-9/22/25. Social workers completing this course receive 6.5 General continuing education credits.
