About This Course

This dynamic, evidence-informed training explores culturally responsive strategies to engage young Black boys and men in mental and behavioral healthcare. Participants will examine the historical, systemic, and psychosocial factors that shape Black male mental health outcomes and explore innovative approaches to foster healing, resilience, and life-affirming care. Through interactive exercises, case studies, and group dialogue, the course equips professionals with tools to dismantle stigma, address systemic barriers, and promote culturally grounded wellness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe mental health and behavioral disparities affecting young Black males, including suicide, trauma, and community violence.
  • Analyze how systemic racism, stigma, and cultural mistrust influence mental health engagement.
  • Identify common cultural norms around masculinity, emotional expression, and mental health help-seeking in Black communities.
  • Apply culturally responsive, trauma-informed strategies to engage Black boys and young men in therapeutic relationships.
  • Evaluate evidence-based programs and community models (e.g., YBMen Project, peer mentorship, faith-based outreach) that support engagement and life-value development.
  • Reflect on personal cultural competence and formulate an individual action plan to improve inclusive, equity-centered practice.

Intended Audience:
