About This Course

This training will provide participants with basic introductory training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents who have been impacted by trauma, and their parents or primary nonoffending caregivers. The training will focus largely on the PRACTICE acronym and how to implement TF-CBT with youth and their nonoffending caregivers.

Learning Objectives: 

• Discuss the research supporting TF-CBT.
• Identify each of the PRACTICE components.
• Identify at least two interventions that can be used with parents (caregivers) as part of TF-CBT.
• Describe at least two relaxation strategies with children.
• Identify the basic elements of the cognitive triangle.
• List at least two strategies to help children achieve better affective regulation.
• Discuss how to implement the trauma narration component with children.
• Discuss how to implement TF-CBT with children of different ages.
• Discuss how to implement TF-CBT with children and families from different cultural backgrounds.
• Identify two methods of helping children to cognitively process trauma-related distortions.
• Describe at least two reasons why conjoint sessions to share the trauma narrative should not be conducted.
• Identify how to assist caregivers to cognitively process trauma-related distortions.

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.
