About This Course

One of the limitations of traditional approaches to Motivational Interviewing (MI) is the narrow focus on individual behavior change. Macro MI recognizes that our behavior patterns often emerge in response to oppressive structures. Macro MI uses the 5 components SHARP framework, Structural oppression; Historical Content; Analysis of role; Reciprocity and Mutuality; and Power to help individuals engage in individual as well a social change. This interactive training will introduce Macro MI as well as exercises that allow practitioners  to understand how it might be used in their practice settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to identify the core components of Macro MI
  • Attendees will be able to discuss the way oppressive structures create barriers to individual behavior change
  • Attendees will be demonstrating how MI skill can be used to broach the topic of oppressive structures in the context of behavior change.
  • Attendees will be able to identify at least one organization they can refer their clients to if they are interested in engaging in social change efforts.
