About This Course
Research indicates that using FDA-approved medications to manage tobacco withdrawal with a behavior change plan doubles successful outcomes for tobacco use disorder treatment interventions. However, since these products are sold over-the-counter it is believed that many tobacco users who have tied using them are not using them properly, underdosing or discontinuing them prematurely. This presentation offers information on the proper use of nicotine replacement and non-nicotine medications, and recommendations for responding to common medication questions.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the symptoms of tobacco withdrawal
- Identify FDA-approved medications to manage tobacco withdrawal and craving
- Develop an understanding of the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy to treat tobacco use disorder
- Describe how to dose and properly use nicotine and non-nicotine medications
- Respond to common medication questions and concerns
Intended Audience:
Individuals who are working toward or have secured the role of Certified Peer Specialist, Certified Recovery Specialist, Certified Family Recovery Specialist or Recovery Specialist Supervisor
