About This Course
The treatment of eating disorders in adults and youth remains one of the most challenging treatment formulations in mental health. Some of what makes treatment difficult is that there are multiple etiologies for eating disordered behavior. One of the most complex is when eating disordered behavior is a consequence of emotion dysregulation.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy was originally designed for adults with borderline personality disorder. Over the past 39 years, the treatment has been well-researched and found to be effective in treating children, teens and adults with a wide range of presenting problems, including substance abuse, eating disorders, and aggression. When clients with underlying problems with emotion regulation including suicidality, self-injury and trauma present with eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and/or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), clinicians must understand how complex problems impact treatment. Treatment planning with complex clients requires that clinicians effectively conceptualize the client’s core problem(s) and select interventions that can be considered the “straightest line” in improving the client’s quality of life. When clients in Dialectical Behavior Therapy present with eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and/or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), clinicians must be able to incorporate guidelines and interventions consistent with best practices for eating disorders while managing the structure and principles of DBT for underlying problems with emotion regulation.
